Like most of us, you may not be familiar with the teachings of Judith Butler. Fortunately, Dr. Corinne Blackmer, director of Judaic Studies at Southern Connecticut State University and the target of antisemitic hate crimes, steps us through Dr. Butler’s phantasmic worldview.
While we do not address the non-binary Judith Butler in her (their) preferred pronouns of they/them, we explore some of her philosophical underpinnings, which seem to prefer performative art (performativity) to reality. Gender is viewed as something that one “does,” rather than something one “is.” Welcome to the madness, and welcome to the strange intersectionality of queerness and antisemitism. *
